Twas the Week Before Christmas

Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the church

Megan was scrambling around, doing work.

The costumes were hung in the hall with great care,

In hopes that the Sunday-School kids would be there.

There was Mary, and Joseph, and wise people two,

And shepherds, with sheep and one donkey, too.

Having written, directed, and planned it all out,

I knew the play would go well, without doubt.

The children were nervous, and started to whine,

They were all afraid they’d forget their lines.

The set was not painted, the props gone astray,

I reminded myself that all plays go this way:

Rehearsal is rough, but when showtime is near,

Everyone does their part with great cheer.

When rehearsal was over, and all had gone home,

I snuck to the office for a bit of shalom.

Work still to be done ran through my head

And the lengthening list filled me with dread.

Instead, I opened the book by my side

And searched for some calm to turn back the tide.

When, what to my wondering eyes did appear,

But the words of the angel, “Mary, do not fear.”

As I read on, I remembered the story

Of the little boy child who brought heaven’s glory

To a humble manger in a small, quiet town

And was Emmanuel, our God come down.

The Lord of all lords was born as a babe

To love all creation, and also to save.

Thank God for this time we remember the birth

Of the one who redeemed everybody on earth.

With God’s love I wish you, ere this blog leaves your sight,

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
